Dr. Theodoro brings a unique perspective to this nearly universal healthcare-related memory problem. As a practicing cardiac surgeon at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson, he often witnesses how even the most attentive patients struggle to remember key information about their medical condition and treatment plans. This common problem frequently limits patients’ engagement in their own healthcare journey.
The economic implications of this “crisis” can’t be ignored. Healthcare waste in the United States now exceeds $1 trillion annually, and economists estimate that 25-33 cents of every healthcare dollar is wasted. Medication non-compliance alone costs between $100 billion and $500 billion a year.
In the discussion, Gerard Gibert spoke of his own experience with a cancer diagnosis in 2006. As he recounted the challenge of accurately remembering and understanding complex medical information while processing a life-changing diagnosis, the human dimension of the problem became clear.
Individuals faced with new and serious health conditions often only partially “hear” the words of their provider and commomly cannot adequately absorb, process and place into context the information they are told. This lack of recall, understanding, and engagement is an enormous problem worth solving.
How MyDocSaid is Enabling Patient Empowerment Through Technology
As part of their effort to combat this pervasive and growing problem, the team at Recorded Health created MyDocSaid – an app that allows patients to record all their healthcare conversations with their smartphones. But this app is far more than a recording tool.
Once the conversation ends, the audio is encrypted and sent to RecordedHealth's HIPAA-compliant cloud platform. Natural language processing (NLP) converts the audio into unabridged text, and self-hosted large language models (LLMs) simultaneously create actionable patient- care summaries and research-backed insight reports.
Using Named Entity Recognition (NER) technology, MyDocSaid can identify complex medical terms and link them to trusted educational sources. Now, a patient can access a record of their conversation alongside the trusted supporting resources to give them a more completeand personalized understanding of what was said.
According to Dr. Theodoro, the MyDocsaid platform can capture and preserve “the humanity of medicine” – the natural give-and-take dialogue between patients and providers that is lost in the electronic health record (EHR). MyDocSaid also captures and maintains the extremely important semantics and context of the patient-provider conversation which greatly helps with patient understanding of and participation in their health journey.

What Is Logical Data Interoperability And How Does It Improve Understanding and Usefulness?
The current US healthcare system relies on patient-specific data in the electronic health records that is unfortunately siloed, scattered in different places, and most commonly lacks important semantics and context. This problem is global: research supports that nearly 80% of the world’s health data is unstructured and difficult to access, understand, and put to use at a moment’s notice.
A solution to this widespread and detrimental health information problem is advanced “logical” data interoperability – the ability to represent the data’s true meaning, intent, semantic context, and relationship with other data.
How can this be done? According to Dr. Theodoro and his team, the solution lies in Ontology-driven Patient Journey Knowledge Graphs (PJKGs), where a patient’s entire healthcare journey information is represented, stored securely, and accessible on-demand always. The PJKG’s allows patient to fully understand and use their health-related data because PJKG’s support the use of powerful AI learning algorithms and LLM’s that let patients “talk” to and ask questions of their data.
